What do chiropractors treat?
Chiropractic treatment is a hands-on therapy that involves safe, often gentle, specific manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly.
In the early stages of treatment, the focus is on reducing painful symptoms and inflammation as well as improving function. Apart from manipulation, advice may be given on self-help, exercise rehabilitation and lifestyle changes.
YOU SHOULD NOT FEEL ANY PAIN DURING OR AFTER TREATMENT, BUT YOU MAY EXPERIENCE TEMPORARY BEARABLE DISCOMFORT.
During the later stages of treatment, the focus then shifts to education and learning how to maintain improvement and manage the condition in future through Pilates and functional exercise training.

Back pain is very common. Most people will suffer one or more episodes of back pain during their lives. In many cases, it starts suddenly and gets better quickly, without the need for any treatment or it can develop gradually over the course of months and even years. It may start following a specific incident, such as bending/twisting awkwardly or lifting a heavy weight. Or, it could be the result of prolonged sitting, poor posture or repetitive strain.
Back pain can be extremely painful, debilitating and persistent, and some people suffer repeated episodes. It may also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as buttock/leg pain or sciatica.
-
Neck pain is also very common. Again, most people will suffer one or more episodes of neck pain during their lives that starts suddenly and gets better quickly, without the need for any treatment.
Neck pain may also be associated with other symptoms, such as arm pain or headaches. It may start following a traumatic incident, such as a road traffic collision, or it may start gradually, perhaps as a result of poor posture or an uncomfortable work position.

Whether you are an amateur sports enthusiast or a top-flight professional, your body is prone to the same kinds of aches and pains. Repeated stresses can lead to a slight loss of proper movement in the bones of your spine (vertebrae) and joints, which in turn, can interfere with the healthy working of your muscles and nerves. You may have ignored the pain and carried on with your sport for too long without treatment.
Some people think that ‘running it off’ is a good idea, but this is usually not the case. If your body is not working properly, you will continue to overload the body, prolonging the healing process and risking further problems.

Chiropractors often see patients with problems of the shoulder, neck, elbow, back, hip, knee and ankle. Pain in these joints can stem from a number of issues and a thorough case history and examination will help determine the source.

What’s the Difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath?
Both professions treat the neuromusculoskeletal system when dysfunction occurs to any or all of these systems. They are educated and trained to degree level and are strictly regulated in the UK. It is a criminal offence for anyone to call themselves a Chiropractor or Osteopath who has not received undergraduate training.
The easiest way to answer this question is to use direct quotes from the organisations that regulate these two professions in the UK. If you are experiencing joint/muscle and/or nerve pain, either professional may be able to alleviate your symptoms.
“How can a chiropractor help you? (GCC General Chiropractic Council)
Chiropractors are qualified health professionals who can assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, such as back and neck pain, minor sports injuries and sciatica.
Chiropractic treatment can be beneficial for a number of reasons; relieving symptoms of pain and discomfort, improving mobility and reducing disability associated with muscle and joint problems.
Chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques when treating their patients. They are best known for using manual methods of care, including spinal and joint manipulation (also referred to as ‘adjustment’) but may also use other hands-on or instrument-assisted approaches.
Many chiropractors will also provide lifestyle advice and exercises to help you manage your condition. This may include dietary and nutritional advice as well as strategies to manage stress and discomfort.
Before starting treatment, a chiropractor will assess your symptoms to determine if chiropractic treatment is right for you and your condition, and what techniques are most likely to help. Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment will not help a medical condition and will make a referral to your General Practitioner or another healthcare professional, if necessary.” - gcc-uk.org
“What osteopathy is? (GOC General Osteopathic Council)
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.” - osteopathy.org.uk

-
Yes… Chiropractic is a safe, gentle way to gain relief from low back and pelvic girdle pain, neck pain and headaches.
-
Treatments after the first consultation are usually 20 minutes.
-
No. Chiropractic care usually needs to be more frequent during the initial stage or recovery phase. This is where we improve motion to the joints/muscles to reduce pain sensitivity and symptoms.
Treatments are then spaced further apart and supported with ‘tailored’ exercises. This gives the body time to heal and get used to the changes that are being made. After this, the pain will have subsided significantly, if not completely. The aim here is to keep your joint function optimum and prevent the symptoms from returning.
Many people who suffer long-term back pain can benefit from regular, supportive chiropractic care to reduce the risk of recurrent episodes.
